Elections will take place in Gujarat on 11 and 16 December. The election will be a decisive force in determining the fate of Narendra Modi. This decisive elections will not only decide the fate of BJP in the state but rather will ascertain if India is on the verge of becoming a Hindu rashtra. The landslide victory in 2002 assembly elections gave a misleading picture of what India has stood for all these years. Thelma sting shows the ugly side of the BJP.

Gujarat has a shocking history of riots. The state has witnessed more than 400 riots since 1947, majority of which were during Congress rule. I don’t condone the death of these innocents but what I fail to understand is why the Congress gets the shield of secular while the BJP is labeled as communal. The Godhra riots are the considered a blot on the state, maybe because of the use of the state machinery for the massacre of the minorities. There may be extremists in every religion but what is traumatic is the use of state machinery for the massacre of a section of those who has entrusted faith in him by electing him as their representatives.

Modi won accolades in 2002 election and was projected as the hindutva warrior. But in this election, he has changed his perspective, that of a progressive leader. Still he has to do with dissidents like Keshubhai patel. He has to fight the Congress, which after the debacle in U.P. has little to depend on. In spite of projecting Rahul Gandhi as the face of Congress, the party remains without a leader and a program. If BJP wins this time round, the reason definitely will be because of the inability of the Congress to stand up to the occasion and give the people an alternate choice.

Modi is busy touring the state to garner support. It is yet to be seen if Gujarat is able to rise above the hindutva ideology. He has little support of his party members. It’s not the Congress but the sangh parivar that awaits his downfall. Although much has been said about the development work done by Modi, the country is yet to recover from the riots that shook the foundation of humanity.

It may not be an unusual sight to be swarmed by children in a traffic jam, pleading to give them a penny or two. You may have jerked many of them for knocking the windscreen of your new Indica V2 or have ridiculed the parents of those whom you may see performing aerobics on red light. Many people may be generous enough to offer them money. Your rupee may make his day better but have we ever realized that it could make his life worse. What seems a mere case of poverty forcing these tiny tots into begging is just a myth. The reality is far darker and horrid. Begging is just a small aspect of the giant organized business called child trafficking.

According to a survey by Reuters AlterNet, India is the sixth most dangerous place in the world for children. Reports say around 1.2 million children are trafficked annually for labour or sex. India may be packaged as an IT destination, may be known for its unique Bollywood masala movies, but the reality is far more dark and horrid. But far from this glamour and glitz, children are being brought and sold like commodities for prices less than what you would spend with your friends for coffee at barista or Coffee Day.

Trafficking is said to be the 3rd largest trade after drug and arms and is said to be an operation worth 10 billion US dollars annually. Nearly 1 to 4 million people are trafficked annually, says a report by the UN. The National Human Rights Committee in its finding says nearly 40, 000 children are reported missing every year in India.

Minal Manisha, who has worked with an NGO called HAQ centre for child rights gives some more alarming statistics. She quotes the National Crime Records Bureau, 2005, where 3757 cases of kidnapping and abduction of children up to 18 years had taken place in 2005. Out of this 1693 were for the purpose of marriage, 501 for illicit intercourse, 3 for selling body parts, 117 for prostitution, 15 for unlawful activity, and 41 for adoption, 19 for begging and rest for slavery. A rough estimate says around 200 girls below 15 years of age enter prostitution in India daily.

Children are bought and sold for many reasons, be it sexual exploitation, which includes prostitution, sex tourism and pornography, begging, drug peddling, organ trade, labour, both as domestic servant or bonded labour, entertainment as camel jockeys, performers in circus or as beer bar dancers or even for adoption or marriage. Many may wonder why children. It is because they are vulnerable, easy to be coerced and manipulated. Child trafficking is a complex phenomenon. It has a well organized network. The nexus includes brothel owners, pimps, police as well as peer groups as well as relatives.

Several national and international NGOs are working in this direction. Campaign against Child Trafficking focuses only on child trafficking. It has its chapters in South East Asia, South America, Europe, southern and western Africa. The campaign has been involved in rescuing the victims, addressing the root cause of the problem and drawing government attention for appropriate action. 12 December is observed as Global Day against Child Trafficking, in order to raise public awareness.

The Indian government too should firm its resolve to fight this menace. The Offences against Child bill 2005 has kept Jammu and Kashmir outside its purview. The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956 also needs to be amended to reduce victimization of girls and lay greater culpability on pimps and traffickers and touts. The Ministry of Labour has issued notification to prohibit employment of children as domestic of commercial labrours. The ban has been imposed under Child Labour (prohibition and regulation) Act 1986, but will be effective from 10 October 2006.

These policies cater only to the victims; it is high time for the root cause to be accessed. Poverty alleviation, employment generation and empowering the poor needs to be the strategy so that this ongoing sale of innocence stops.

The clock has just struck nine. My mother is frantic. She is worried about the dinner not yet being ready. Not because she is afraid that we will sleep hungry but rather because she doesn’t want to miss her daily dose of the balaji soaps, if she remains in the kitchen for another minute. No, don’t take me wrong. I admit she is a dotting mother, enjoys cooking and loves pouring spoonful into everyone plate. (No matter we are hungry or not) And don’t you dare smile at this extremely tense moment of hers. She is not the only one. Her anxiety is shared by many more TV buffs in India who religiously watch these daily soaps. These sops are hugely popular especially among home makers. Enter any house in your neighbourhood after nine, and I bet you will get the sight of all women folk of the household glued to their television sets. The remote may be missing from their hands (because there is no need of channel surfing, these go on till late midnight, under different names but more or less the same story) but rather with tissues to wipe off tears. Why tears? Well what do expect from your moms when Mihir leaves Tulsi for that vile Mandira, or when another illegitimate child of Mihir pops up from God knows where.

Telecast during prime time these sops narrate family sagas and are known for celebrating traditional Indian values. They are highly dramatic and theateritacally powerful and touch upon all chords of human emotion. Many a times they have cathartic effect on their viewers. The soaps are a topic of social discussion and the celebrity characters have become household names. The king of Bollywood Shahrukh khan remembers how his house in Delhi was crowded with fans asking for autographs. The humble Khan made an appearance to the public but to his dismay soon realized that the crowd was not for him but for Ronit Roy who was also with him in his home. The incident just shows the massive popularity and impact of these serials.

The Indian soap opera industry is more of a mass production agency with most of the serials made under a single banner dominated by Balaji Productions. It is headed by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the daughter and wife of yesteryears Bollywood star Jitendra. These run on different channels and in different languages, but without much difference in the theme. Love stories resulting in family rivalries, extra marital affair to name a few are the core of these stories. They are supplemented with murders, kidnappings and conspiracies. A standard feature remains the 20 years leap where the characters’ age is reflected by streaks of fake white hair, while the face remains young. The entire ambience and sets are lavish. The dress worn by the cast are splendidly bulky. The camera is artistically engaged in such a manner that it sensationalizes the climax.

Ekta has mastered the art of selling her soaps by way of beautiful sets and lavish dresses. But despite all criticisms these are irresistible and we love them.

Global warming has become the biggest threat to the survival of humanity. Atiya Anis analyses the damage done.

Yesterday while I was glancing through the newspaper, I saw a report released by the White House. It says that the next 30 to 40 years will see wars over water. Increased hunger, instability, rising sea level and global warming refugees will be the new challenges of the millennium. The former US Army chief of staff Gordon Sullivan said, ‘Climate change exacerbates an already unstable situation. It’s not hard to make a connection between climate change and instability or climate change and terrorism.’

The entire world today is concerned about the sudden shift in the weather seen in almost every part of the continent. About 35,000 people died from heat waves in Europe in 2003. The threat posed by the green house emission is expected to bring unprecedented change in the climate. An Intergovernmental Panel on climate change was created in 1998 constituting of scientists of about 113 countries. In its recent assessment of the situation the committee said, ‘Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as it is evident from observations of increase in global average air and ocean temperature, widespread melting of snow and ice and rise in global mean sea level.’ The coming years may comprise of fewer cold days, hotter nights, killer heat waves, floods, devastating drought and an increase in hurricane and storms. If the polar ice still continues to melt, the sea level will rise by 7-23 inches. It means devastation for those who live by the coast. Methane, ozone and dust have an increased presence in the atmosphere with CO2 being 30 percent higher than that in pre-industrialized era.

The year 2006 saw very mild winter. The temperatures reached up to 35 degrees by the end of January. Unseasoned rain and storm have become the order of the day. The untimely rain in Mumbai on July 26 and 27, 2005 is a clear example of uneven climate change. As the glaciers melt there will be an adverse impact on the food grain production. Availability of water will also decline to 30 percent by the end of 2050. The global warming is expected to raise the earth’s temperature 1.4 to 5.8 degree Celsius by the century end.

The dignitaries at Kyoto agreed to the fact that the developed countries were the major contributors to the greenhouse emission, with US being responsible for one third of the emission. Fossil fuel is still the prime source of energy generation. Apoorva Sainai who is working with Taru Mitra. (An organization for protection of trees) observes that for every kilowatt-hour of electricity produced about 1.39 pounds of carbon dioxide is released in the air. This excess emission may be absorbed in the ocean but the over accumulation may further change the chemistry of the oceans making it more acidic and threatening to marine life.

But another aspect of the story still uncovered is that a long period of cooling may also be expected. The coolest occur around 2030. Recent data indicates that the Antarctica has cooled over the years instead of warming up. The 8200-year-old event of Little Ice age may reoccur. Ice age lasted from 1300 to 1870. Farms in Norway were covered with glaciers and the entire Europe witnessed famine and crop failure. ‘We still don’t understand the reasons behind the increase. Greenland’s temperature dropped by about 3 degrees Celsius. The scientists worldwide seem to be puzzled over the abrupt climatic changes. Researchers suggest that the increase in the green house emission may lead to abrupt cooling. According to meteorologists, the 11 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1990. The plants and animals are adapting and moving — some even going extinct — because they have no choice.

‘Changes in the conveyor were responsible for some of the most noticeable climate changes in scientific history. About 12,000 years ago, as the earth emerged from the most recent Ice Age and the North Atlantic region warmed, an influx of fresh water - perhaps from melting ice sheets - shut down the great conveyor and plunged much of the Northern Hemisphere back into ice-age conditions that lasted 1,000 years. About 500 years ago a reduction of the ocean conveyors may have turned the climate in northern Europe and the northeastern United States much colder, during what became known as the Little Ice Age, which lasted for about 300 years. In America, the Little Ice Age coincided with the notorious winter at Valley Forg,’ says Terrence Joyce a scientist says in New York Times.

‘Adding 1 million trees to the city will reduce carbon dioxide by 1 million tons, which is equal to 7000 cars being off the road each year,’ adds a renowned environmentalist. Though the damages done are irreparable yet we all can do something on our part to minimize the greenhouse emission. The use of solar devices, stop misuse of electricity, conservation of water is some steps, which can make the world a safer place for the next generation. Alarm bells are ringing. The sooner the world wakes up to the reality the greater is the possibility of security.
